An interdisciplinary meeting on “The Renal–Oral Axis: Diagnostic Biochemistry and Dental Considerations” was conducted on 20th January 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, at the SMT Padmavathy Ammal Memorial Auditorium, RVS Dental College & Hospital. The programme was organized by the Department of Biochemistry in collaboration with the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology.

The session highlighted the strong association between renal diseases and oral health, emphasizing the role of diagnostic biochemistry in identifying systemic renal disorders and their oral manifestations to aid comprehensive dental care. Common oral findings in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and nephritic syndrome discussed included xerostomia, uremic fetor, metallic taste (dysgeusia), glossitis, mucosal pallor, lip and gingival edema, gingival bleeding, periodontal disease, uremic stomatitis, candidiasis, petechiae, ecchymosis, and enamel hypoplasia.

Key dental considerations in CKD patients, particularly those in stages 4 and 5, were addressed, stressing the need for interdisciplinary coordination with nephrologists. Emphasis was placed on monitoring BUN and serum creatinine, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) for drug dosage modification, complete blood count for renal anemia, platelet function due to uremic dysfunction, and coagulation parameters (PT, PTT, INR), especially in patients undergoing dialysis or on anticoagulant therapy.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Vijay V. K., Director cum Principal, RVS Dental College & Hospital, and conducted under the guidance of Dr. Murugesan, Head, Department of Biochemistry; Dr. Chandrakala S. A., Head, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology; and Dr. Lakshmi Nrusimhan, Reader, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology.

Academic presentations were delivered by interns Santhiya K, Sarika I, Senthamil Selvi S, Shri Swathi R, and Sneha S, who elaborated on the biochemical basis and clinical relevance of renal disorders in dental practice. The session witnessed active participation from all department heads, faculty members, postgraduates, interns, and students, followed by an open discussion and interactive question-and-answer session.

The meet concluded with the distribution of certificates to the presenters, marking the successful completion of an academically enriching interdisciplinary program.
