CAMP REPORT
To commemorate National Oral Medicine and Radiology Day, the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology organized a FreeOral Cancer Screening Camp on 13th and 14th May 2025 at National Fittings Limited, Kaniyur, Sulur, Coimbatore – 641659.
Under the esteemed guidance of Dr. Chandrakala S A, Head of the Department, a dedicated team comprising interns, final-year students, Dr. Umesh (Head of the Department of Public Health Dentistry), Dr. Lakshminrusimhan D K S (Reader, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology), Dr. Saranya (Senior Lecturer, Department of Public Health Dentistry), and Ms. Krithika (Tobacco Cessation Counsellor, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology) actively participated in the camp.A health talk was delivered in local language highlighting the incidence of oral cancer in India and the significant role of tobacco use in its development.
A total of 165 patients were screened and examined for potential lesions in the oral cavity. Among them 39 patients had tobacco related lesions. Toluidine blue staining was done for patients having potentially malignant disorders. Tobacco cessation counselling was given to patients with smoking and tobacco chewing habits. Sample tooth paste and antioxidants were distributed to the patients. Oral prophylaxis was done to the patients and restorations were carried out for patients with dental caries.
The camp aimed at early detection and prevention of oral cancer, especially among individuals at risk due to tobacco usage. Educational and clinical interventions were effectively implemented to raise awareness and promote oral health.
